Community Header Contest

This is the submission post for entries for the New Community Header contest. All comments are screened. Please submit your entries in the comments by March 7th, 2008.

Fic posting policy!

Alright. So our old fic policy has been deleted by the hacker. So I'm reposting as well as I can remember how everything went. If I'm wrong at any point or you have any questions, please leave a comment and we'll sort it out, okay?

* Please do not post multiple times when one will do. If you are posting a series of drabbles, make a single post with multiple cut tags and headers for each. Each drabble does not need a single post and it will only clog up the community.

*For multi part fics we don't want 5 posts in a row for a fic. If you are posting a 2 part fic with each part in a different entry, that’s fine. If you are posting a 10 part fic, each part having its own entry, offer links to the story in your own journal or on another service. Otherwise it overwhelms the community. You may not post more than 3 fic posts in a row on a given day.

* Please use a header that specifies:

Warnings (such as rape, character death, etc)

And any other things you feel are necessary. Everything else should be under a cut tag.

* You may not update your fics if they have their own community. It goes in line with our "Please do not post updates to your own community here" policy. You may contact a mod as per usual and ask if you may post a promotion for your community and after that, if people are interested they will join your community.

Spoiler Policy!

We've revised our spoiler policy due to issues that have cropped up over the past few months. Please read carefully! If you're confused, or something isn't covered here, ask us.

If you post icons to this community using a picture that could be considered spoilery in any way, please put those icons behind a cut tag, and don't use them as a preview. There have been recent on-set photos that many people do consider spoilers, and they have been used in the previews. Please just think about this before you post.

If you have an icon that has a spoiler, please don't use it in general, everyday community posts. We can enforce this rule by deleting comments, but by then the damage is done, and that's not the type of community we'd like to have. Please consider other members and their enjoyment of the movie. You might not think something is a big issue, but someone else might.

Out of consideration for others, don't bring spoilers into non spoilery discussions. For instance, if someone is talking about the series finale and whether they enjoyed it, please don't make a comment that reveals how the plot of the movie will address such and such an issue. Keep it to the spoiler threads. People who don't want to be spoiled will stay out of them.

Now, the big one -- posting and discussion spoilers.

You CAN post:
+ Interviews, magazine articles, movie write ups, etc.
+ Pictures from magazines or interviews, pictures from on set, both officially released and otherwise obtained.
+ Video clips from the movie (promos, trailers, etc) as well as video clips from set, both officially released and otherwise obtained.
+ Casting news.

You CAN'T post:
+ Rumours from blogs, blind items, etc.
+ Your friend of a friend heard that the new movie is about..., etc.
+ Casting sides/pieces of script (we have no way of verifying that they are real and we want to have actual spoilers here. Harry Potter fandom learned about these the hard way, guys.)

Regardless of the fact that something is allowed to be posted, it MUST BE UNDER A CUT TAG. NO EXCEPTIONS.

We'd like people to begin labeling their cut tags a little more specifically - give the pertinent details, but don't reveal the spoiler itself. For example:
"Video - Mulder and Scully, plot relevant"
"Pictures - major plot reveal, no major characters"
"Mulder, Scully find William - Video"
"On-set paparazzi pictures of Krycek!"

We mods are trying to remain unspoiled. You can see how this might be hard! So we've asked a friend from the fandom to look over spoilery posts and let us know if the cut tag is there and that the relevant information is included. We're hoping this will help keep everyone happy.

We are the largest XF community on LJ, but we are by no means the only one. xfiles2 is a community already set up that explicitly allows spoilers. Or feel free to make your own. You have a lot of choices, so take it elsewhere!

There is a certain point at which this is just going to have to be left up to our discretion. We're doing our best to accommodate everyone and it seems that many people want to be spoiler free, so we'll do our very best to make sure that you only see what you want to see. Thanks to everyone for their co-operation!

1. Do not make personal attacks or insult each other. Be decent.

2. All posts must enable comments! If you disable them, we will delete your post.

3. If I can type your questions' key words into Google and find the answer, I will delete your post. The same goes if I can scroll back in this community a few pages and find the exact same question. This is a community for discussion. If you have a question that you just cannot find the answer to on your own, please post it and we’ll try to help you out. However, there are lots of links in the FAQ and this is not a place to post because you are feeling too lazy to find the answer yourself.

4. All ship preferences, whether they be MSR, DSR, DRR, WHATEVER will be respected and welcomed. If a person is posting a discussion of a ship, voice your opinion in a respectful manner and do not belittle people for their feelings or opinions. As well, if a person is posting, for example, icons of a ship you do not like, don't go out of your way to start nagging on that person's ship. That's not why they’re here.

That being said, please be reasonable in what you post and in the topics you bring up. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I would ask a mark of courtesy that you do not post things here that you know will cause nothing but a flame war. If you suspect that such a thing might happen, please run your post by me or post a link to your discussion with a note as to what it's about. This way, those who are interested in the discussion can head over and those who might find it offensive can easily avoid it and the temptation to become aggressive.

5. If you would like to advertise a new community here, please contact us first.

6. If you are posting images, you may leave 3 icons out from the LJ cut, but please cut the rest to spare both those on dial-up and those whose layouts might become warped.

7. Please refrain from posting:

- personal introductions. Friending memes are okay, but we have a ton of members, and introductions don't help the discussion life of the community very much.

- one line episode squeeing. If you are really loving an episode, make a post asking what people thought about it or about a particular aspect of it. We want this place to be a forum for discussion.

- episode schedules. If people want to watch, they'll seek it out for themselves.

- that you just bought DVDs, that you just saw a guy who looked exactly like Tom Braidwood, that season 5 is so totally awesome, that Mulder is so hot, etc. Let's make this a place for real discussion again.

- updates to your own communities. If people want to know when your community is updated, they will join THAT community.

- something vaguely related to the show in a really tiny and obscure way. You'll know it when it happens ;)

8. Please write in a way that allows everyone to understand you. Netspeak isn't going to go over well, and it just makes people cranky when they have to struggle to read what you have to say.

Please ensure that what you are posting is of value to the community at large and that you are not using the community when you should be using your personal journal.

We reserve the right to delete posts that break these rules, so please follow them and contact a mod if you have any questions.
I'll leave a reminder here, in case people have questions.

Because of our history of being hacked, we are still screening new members. This means, when you apply to join, your screenname shows up in a queue and we go look at your journals, one by one. We essentially make an individual decision, based on our best judgement.

In case you are thinking of applying, or have been recently rejected, here are some of the things we watch for that might get you refused:

1. Newly created journals.
2. Journals with no posts (it's okay if you're friends-only - we can look at the date of your latest post on your userinfo. It's always helpful to have a friends-only post, of course.)
3. Journals with superficial "spam" posts - full of memes and the like.
4. Journals with few friends and many communities. Using your journal just to talk on communities is "suspicious."

In summary, you are much more likely to be accepted if you use your journal. If you use it infrequently for "spam" type posts, if you haven't updated in two years, if it doesn't look "lived in," it looks suspicious and we will probably press the "reject" button.

Obviously, if you just created your journal, you're still working on this, and it will take time for you to build up posts, friends, and so on. Please don't take your immediate rejection and never come back - if you come back after even a month of regular posting and apply again, we will probably accept you. We aren't trying to keep people out; just to keep the community secure.

For individual questions, please comment on the ask-a-mod post below. Thanks!
